Help Us Serve Voters

Voter Service provides citizens with nonpartisan, unbiased information to help them participate effectively in government. Voter Service is separate from League Action, and League positions on issues are never indicated in any way in the Voter Service activities.

1. The League of Women Voters of Michigan VOTER GUIDES - Prepared by the Michigan League and distributed prior to state elections, the Guides contain a description of offices to be voted on, information on candidates supplied by the candidates, and a nonpartisan explanation of the ballot issues.

2. THEY REPRESENT YOU - Prepared by local Leagues each year, this publication provides information about our government officials and how to reach them.

3. CITIZEN'S HANDBOOK - Prepared by the LWV of Michigan, it gives basic citizen information on voting procedures, elections, political parties, and state offices.

4. FORUMS - Candidate forums are sponsored by the League for many elections to help voters learn about their choices. Issue forums allow both sides to present their case and answer questions from the audience.

ACTION
League members focus on the specific governmental issues chosen by members at the national, state, and local levels for:

1. concentrated study and then consensus
2. action in support of League positions.

A local program is adopted every year, while state and national programs are adopted every two years.

How can the League be nonpartisan and still take stands on issues?

The League is nonpartisan because it never supports or opposes candidates or political parties, although it does take stands on governmental issues selected by the members. After an issue has been thoroughly studied and discussed by the members, consensus is taken and a position reached. The League then takes stands or acts only within that position.

League Action, a lobbying activity, is separate from Voter Service.
