Michigan Court Reform

Judicial Independence

Great News! Since the Courting Trouble Forum in October, dedicated volunteers have collected more than 1,100 signatures on petitions for Senators McManus and Allen. As a result of the tremendous success of this petition drive, efforts will be made to capture the attention of the media and make a clear statement to our legislators that Michigan citizens are truly concerned about the fairness and independence of the Michigan Supreme Court and want reform now.

More Great News! To enhance the impact of these petitions, the Michigan Independent Supreme Court Campaign (MISCC) Steering Committee has decided to present them in person to our Senators in Lansing. To do this, MISCC has planned a “Road Trip to Lansing” on Tuesday, February 19th. A bus is being rented to take volunteers from Traverse City to Lansing and back, and while there they will meet privately with Senator McManus and hold a reception in Lansing for other legislators and interested representatives of other grassroots groups. The February 19th Road Trip is an important next step in our campaign to move court reform forward. In addition to the visibility it will engender for the cause, the group also hopes it will be an opportunity to connect with other organizations that can help make this a state-wide campaign.

Letters are being sent to petition volunteers. Space will be limited, so MISCC is asking that those interested please register early for the trip. To register, send the attached form with a $10 check, which is required to hold your space and will be used to cover the cost of a box lunch on the bus. The bus will leave the parking lot of the Unitarian Universalist church (6726 Center Road, Traverse City) 8:00 a.m. and return about 10:00 p.m. A brief stop for supper is planned on the way back to Traverse City. Call Pat Laarman (231/352-5328) for more information.
